"Literacy Bridges"

October, 2012

I hope this newsletter finds you healthy and energized in your new school year!  I've been busy seeking new ways to deliver instruction that creates more active learning inside and outside the classroom. Teaching can be such an isolated profession. I encourage you to get out there and start talking to your colleagues to discover what teaching strategies and activities they are using in their classrooms. I challenge you  to talk to someone you don't normally chat with. I think you will be surprised how much they have to share with you. It doesn't matter what subject you teach because I have discovered that ultimately..."Reading Bridges!"

The SCCRC just finished their first event of the year. We shared our love of literacy with the community at the Chinese Moon Festival. It was wonderful to get to read to children young and old, but watching the children's face light up when we said they could take a book or two with them home was priceless.

At the end of this month  we are excited that we are launching a new multigenerational event called, "Reading Under the Stars!"  We are pairing up with Vargas School in Sunnyvale School District to share our love of literacy at their Star Gazing event.  We will be out there reading in a camping like atmosphere with students and their families fiction and nonfiction text about space. We know that "reading bridges" content and curricular topics and wanted to take the opportunity to add a literacy component to a fun family night.  Plus an added bonus...What child wouldn't get excited about reading with a red flashlight?
The SCCRC is also busy putting together a fabulous program for this year's Asilomar Reading Conference.
We are still looking for new presenters that we feel will help add to our program. Asilomar is professional development at
its best. You get to learn and grow professionally while meeting new people with common interests, but it  also
helps build a sense of  camaraderie amongst colleagues.  Which for many...is the reason
they keep coming back!  We hope to see you there!
Wishing you the best teaching year!
